A Star Wars exhibit was hosted by the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum from January 1st, 1998 - January 31, - 1999 in Washington D.C. Thanks to my girlfriend Jennifer, I was able to attend this exhibit on January 12th, 1999. Since the exhibit has closed, I thought it would be a good idea to share the pictures that I took from the exhibit and my memories of what we were able to see there. Although the display area was smaller than I anticipated, it definitely offered more than I could ever expect as far as content goes.

As we reached the entranceway, my anticipation grew. Soon I would be
amongst the costumes and props of my favourite films of all time. Heading
up to the exhibit and handing over my ticket stub, I couldn't help but
take a sneak peak. From that glimpse, I knew that it would be well worth
the trip to Washington.
The first display that we came across had Princess Leia's costume from
Star Wars, a Stormtrooper, Interrogation Droid, and a model of the Imperial
Star Destroyer that started off the fantastic journey through these space
epics. The Star Destroyer was a sight to behold. You could just imagine
the models that were bashed together in order to make such a detailed ship.
The Stormtrooper looked like he had seen many a fight, as the scrapes and
marks covering his armour attested to. Obviously, these costumes had been
put through their durability test during filming. The interrogation Droid
was actually made of the shell of an R2-D2 unit painted black with additional
parts affixed to it, and what looks like a surgeons supply kit added to
give the menacing look!

After
that display, We were greeted by everyone's favourite smuggler Han Solo
and his loyal co-pilot, Chewbacca. It is amazing to think of the detail
that was put in everything Star Wars. Good old Chewbacca looked as though
he might just start talking, as the detail on this costume was simply awesome!
One very nice thing about the exhibit was the fact that the costumes and props were arranged according to the movies which they appeared in. So as you walked through the exhibit, you journeyed through each movie. After encountering Han and Chewie, we came across everyone's favourite droids. R2-D2 and C-3PO who looked like they just got out of an oil bath. Both shined like they did in the final scene from A New Hope. In the background of each display, they had certain matte paintings as well as models of various ships. As you can see in the photo below, the escape pod is right above R2-D2.
